Friday morning dawns clear without much more snow accumulation. Mood improves markedly with sun and sleep. The field is brighter and I can see the next steps into the carving, although I have to stop and consult the model MUCH more often than I ever have in any other carving. I can think two cuts ahead and then have to stop to make sure I'm not touching wood needed by the next knot. Interesting to observe other carvers' reactions to my intention: Brad Sharp says, "You're crazy!" when he sees the model. Peter Bowsher, from Scotland, says, "those are puzzlers!" and Angie Polglaze, from Australia, says, "what a bl**dy mind *&*$#!" Some time later, I realize Angie and Peter have conveyed exactly the same thought, as expressed on opposite sides of the globe. (Angie also added, "I should have known it was your carving after what you did last year!") |

| Releasing the second knot. | Piercing the top knot; need to make sure water won't pool on the wood. | Third knot and beginnings of legs. Sacrificed a chain to get the rest of the muddy bark off. |

State of the carving Friday at lunch. Got the guy with the forklift to put
the carving on my hydraulic table so I could work the lowest knot. Still a solid log. |
The top three knots are fully formed and the lowest one is marked. | Working on the details of the base knot. Using a hand broom to clear sawdust. Legs have been shaped and opened and the carving popped alive once the light was allowed through. Needs more openwork. |
