Red Stripe used many shades of red as I had in my scrap basket, plus a handful that I bought to broaden the range and vary the texture. Stripe width varies from 12 to 35 stitches; no particular scheme to when the colors changed except that I tried to maintain a contrast right to left so the stripes wouldn't disappear into each other. Guage varies, 5-6 stitches to the inch. Can't remember the needle size.
I knit on the Tumbling Blocks sweater every Sunday morning in 1989-90, long before I became a sculptor or realized I could paint and get as much color with much less effort. I would sit on the couch, in stable daylight, and knit while I listened to All Things Considered. At the end of the two-hour program, my hands were worn out and I'd go on to other things.
Each stitch is knitted in two colors, one sport weight and one lace weight. I changed them separately.
Yes, that is two-color ribbing, and yes, both colorways vary throughout the ribbing. (Maybe I should say "colourways," to give a nod to the idea source for this sweater, Kaffe Fassett?) It was not a kit. The judge at the State Fair the year I finished Tumbling Blocks thought my buttons were gaudy.
