Jewelry for the Garden

Sometimes I talk to the log, and sometimes the log talks to me.  These logs had no interest in becoming penguins.  There's a sketchbook full of possibilities. (More Carvings).  The carvings on these pages don't fit into any larger category; I refer to them as "fantasy" because they're somewhere in the gap between realism and abstract.

Sooner or later, every one who works in garden art has to confront the flamingo problem, and I thought the 2004 Studio Tour was the perfect opportunity.  I’d carved a tabletop pair before, but they weren’t much fun.  An unexpected log from the local health department provided wood I could play with, so I carved these birds for the Tour opening show.  They weigh 160# and 180#, respectively.  (The smaller of the two has been sold--the one in the center picture below.)
